Several Lines in Place on Lolo Creek Complex

Posted: Updated:

The top priority wildfire in the nation is now nearly 10,000 acres and is threatening 2,100 homes. While the fire is 40 percent contained, crews actually have fire lines around about 75 percent of the fire.

The sound of helicopters hovering in the air fills Lolo. It's the sound of fire crews gaining the upper hand on the Lolo Creek Complex. A team of three helicopters is dipping into a water and retardant mixture and dropping the liquid on the northeast side of the fire. They're building lines in steep terrain ground crews may have trouble reaching.

"We're pushing line to the north and around the northeast corner of the fire closest to Lolo," said Mike Cole with the Northern Rockies Incident Management Team.

The fire, which is west of town, has been moving north and east, threatening nearly every home in the Lolo community. Crews have been working to build lines on the east side of the fire to prevent it from moving into town. Several contingency lines are in place, but Cole said he doesn't want to call them containment lines until they are sure the lines will hold. Cole said crews feel confident the line of the west side of the fire will hold, so they are confident calling the fire 40 percent contained.

While crews were able to save many homes, it's too late for five homes along Highway 12. They were reduced to rubble when the fire made a run Monday. More than 650 people are on scene fighting this fire.
