West Yellowstone Sees Good Summer Tourism Season

WEST YELLOWSTONE -

As summer comes to an end, vacation is over and kids head back to school.

West Yellowstone, a Montana vacation hot spot, was again a popular place for tourists this summer.

As people head to Yellowstone National Park's busiest gate, they go through West Yellowstone to shop, eat and spend the night.

Kurt Menzel owns Menzel's Curio Store in West Yellowstone.

He said this year was a great year.

"I think we've had a really good business this summer," said Menzel. "It's been very busy and it is continuing to stay that way all though we see a slump this time of year with people going back to school."

He said 2010 was the best year he's had in recent years, and this year is comparable.

"Not like the last 20 years ago but it's holding strong," said Menzel. "We are even with 2010 and I think everyone would agree that was a very good year."

Menzel said the success of Yellowstone National Park brings success into the small town's economy.

"We're here because of Yellowstone," said Menzel.  "It is relative to how well the park goes is how well the town is doing."

According to a recent report, the total number of people visiting Yellowstone was down last July compared to July 2012, but the park saw more vehicles going through the gates.

Yellowstone reached one million visitors in June.

July typically marks the park's peak visitation month, followed by August, June, September and May.
