Wall Works Its Way Into Whitefish

WHITEFISH -

A traveling wall made it's ninety-ninth stop in Whitefish today--the only stop the Vietnam War memorial is making in Big Sky Country.

By the trumpet's blare, the Vietnam War memorial opened to the public today at the Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish.

"It's one of the wars that everybody tries to forget, you know, but you can't forget it, and there's a lot of great young men...that's on this wall," said Carrey Dill, a Vietnam War Veteran and volunteer.

Dill served in Vietnam from 1966 until 1970 and now he is one of dozens of volunteers serving the Flathead Community. The wall will be open around the clock until Sunday, and because of servicemen like Dill, someone will always be available to help locate loved ones amongst almost 58,000 names etched in stone.

"I feel the same as I did with the one in Washington. It's amazing. It does bring tears to your eyes if you're involved in it," said Dill.

Although the wall has made nearly a hundred stops this year alone, this is the first time the wall has come to Montana, thanks to a letter sent to Washington, D. C. back in February of 2012.

"Last January I walked this field with snow and I got a little bit of a vision and now today we're seeing everything come together," related Kelly Kvigne, the memorial's coordinator as well as a veteran, "It is awesome."

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Whitefish supplied the $5,000 it took to get the wall here and to keep it going until it moves on to it's next stop in Iowa.

The opening ceremonies began at 10 a.m. this morning.

Attendees included the Lieutenant Governor John Walsh, who was also the guest speaker.
