Highway 12 Resident Says Sprinklers Saved Home from Fire

Posted: Updated:

LOLO - Ron Henderson and his wife Jan, have lived off Highway 12 for 30 years.
Henderson, who works for a logging company, hauled and laid the logs for his house himself.

"So, it was pretty much a hands-on project."

And in a matter of hours, Henderson says he thought he might lose it all.

While at work, he and his wife got a call from a neighbor, saying the fire had jumped the ridge on the south side of the highway and was heading their way.

"Me and Jan both made a mad dash home and quick started loading stuff in the camp trailer," Henderson said.

Henderson also ran two sprinklers up onto his roof, spraying the entire house.

He says firefighters think the sprinklers may have saved the Hendersons' home.

"Yeah, I'm just glad I don't have to rebuild it."

But, the Hendersons lost their barn, which housed a tractor, 4-wheeler, and snowmobile, and a small shed.

"Got to clean up, there's a lot of scrap metal laying around."

Henderson says the fire also consumed a memorial cross up on ridge north of the house for his son, who past away two years ago.

"That burned up, that was probably one of the more wrenching things we lost out of all of it."

Henderson says he's still counting his blessings.

Several of his neighbors to the east and west lost their entire homes in the fire.

"It's going to be hard to see them, because they're going to be devastated."

Henderson says he was prepared to come home to a pile of ashes, but he's thankful his home is still standing.

"You know, you live somewhere for 30 years, there's a lot of memories and stuff that, you know just family things that go on here."

The Hendersons are staying with family members in Lolo while the area is under evacuation.
