Griz Hire Softball Coach

Posted: Updated:

After more than two years in the making the University of Montana got one step closer to building their softball program in hiring a coach.  Jamie Pinkerton, the former head coach at Tulsa and Arkansas will take the reins and he and the athletic department couldn't be more excited.

"Well I'm ecstatic that's probably the excitement level that I'm at.  I'm really excited to have the opportunity to be the first person to be the head coach at the University of Montana," said Jamie Pinkerton.

"To have someone with such a wide variety of experience that Jamie has, I am just so excited to get him here and to start having him recruit and meet girls that he is going to bring to Montana softball," said Senior Associate AD Jean Gee.

Starting a program from the ground up will be a challenge but Pinkerton may be the perfect man for the job.  He took over a struggling program at Tulsa and within two years went 48-16 which was the second biggest year-to-year turnaround in NCAA history.

"Turning around a program so quickly that was impressive to us and the search committee that he is going to be able to bring that here in building a program, it's very similar and that was important to us and the search committee," said Gee.

"It's an opportunity that doesn't come around very often and it was intriguing to me to be able to start a program and be able to buy that first ball, that first bat, sign that first recruit, buy those first uniforms.  So everything with this program is going to be a first and that's an exciting and unique situation.

Pinkerton, who was born in Arkansas and grew up in Oklahoma says he's only been to Montana on vacation and he's excited to call it home.
