Yellowstone National Park To Improve Roads

Posted: Updated:
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK -

The total number of people visiting Yellowstone National Park went down last month, but more vehicles are entering the park.

Compared to 2012 the number of cars and RVs going into Yellowstone National Park was up more than four percent in July.

But the road system in the park, which was designed in the 1930s, wasn't made to handle the types of vehicles traveling in the park today.

"Our road system was designed for a very different place in time," said Al Nash, Yellowstone National Park Spokesman. "So we are trying to respond to what is here and make driving in Yellowstone safer."

One of the upgrades in the works is adding more turnouts and shoulders.

That is one improvement Berri Primo would like to see.

"A lot of times you don't have those pullouts when you need them," said Primo.  "And when you are going along the cliffs and you look down it's a straight sheer drop, it is a little unnerving and so you like to have that little bit of cushion."

One improvement some advocates are pushing for is a shuttle system in the park.

Nash said the park used to have a system like this, but phased it out over the years.

"Mass transit in Yellowstone started to be phased out because the demand for bus service diminished as more and more people arrived and chose to drive around in their own cars," said Nash.

Nash says Yellowstone is in favor of private companies providing a shuttle service.

One is already in place.

"Existing transit companies have banded together to provide a measure of mass transit in the park, and we are very supportive of this budding effort," said Nash.

Nash said the Yellowstone bus tours actually run by a concession operator in the park and not Yellowstone itself.

July is usually the peak time people visit Yellowstone, followed by August, June, September and May.

SPOKANE, Wash. - One of the great parts about living in Spokane, is if you head out of town in any direction, you're going to run into some beautiful farm land. I grew up south of Spokane, near Plaza, and one of my favorite things to do was to sit on the porch at night and stare south towards Rosalia at all of the rolling hills of wheat, lentils, barley and peas.
