Butte High Football's "Midnight Practice"

Posted: Updated:
A lot of great sports traditions here in the state of Montana one of which is the midnight practice the Butte High bulldogs do, this is the second consecutive season they've done it. It was so popular last year, they eventually won a state title, they're doing it again this year.

"Our defensive coordinator Brian Arnston came up with the idea hey lets try it lot of people do it basketball does it we say hey let's give it a whirl lets try it we're always about trying to do different things and not be the normal what it is," said Butte High head coach Arie Grey.

"We're the very first team in Montana to practice and we're having a good time out there just showing everybody that we're the extra mile to win," said senior center Dustin Lamiaux.

A lot of the allure of the midnight practice is playing under the lights, which is a special experience.

"They want to practice they want to play. They like it under the lights. Everybody likes it under the lights and this is no different it's like a game type atmosphere and it's a lot of fun," said Grey.

Another benefit of the event? The players are more efficient with their school work.

"We've had great weather it's nice and cool work its perfect for the kids. The thing is the kids turn in their stuff a lot earlier than they normally do because they want to be a part of the midnight practice," said Grey.

No matter how unique the midnight practice is, it doesn't mask the long hours training in the off season.

"We've just been working hard in the weight room all summer keeping track I think we've had 159 weight sessions since last season everybody has stepped up and made it to most of those weight sessions," said Lamiaux.
