Nimrod Fire Grows To 600 Acres

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

Crews battling the now 600 acre Nimrod fire, east of Missoula, are up against a red flag weather warning. The fire is currently zero percent contained, but no evacuation orders are in place.

Clinton resident, Preston Bull went through a huge scare on Thursday, when he saw large plumes of smoke just down the highway from his home.

"I saw the smoke and knew it was near by. I tried to find it online, saw it was only a few miles away, wanted to check it out myself," Bull said.

On Friday, Bull and his dog, Ed took a trip down the highway to the check out the Nimrod fire. He said he was immediately less worried it would reach any homes when he saw the work the firefighters were doing.

"They're doing a good job. We've been here, what, a half hour forty five minutes, and we've seen two more choppers come in. The fire crews are wonderful making their presence known," Bull said.

Cindy Super of the DNRC said that's exactly the goal of fire crews, since the blaze was reported 6 p.m. on Thursday, between the Beavertail and Bearmouth exits, and on the north side of Interstate 90.

"The fire started Thursday afternoon, and took off pretty fast. This was a rapid and aggressive initial attack, we had a lot of air crews," Super said.

Fire officials said high winds and low humidity could allow the Nimrod fire to quickly spread through the area's dry grass and downed timber. This caused the area to go into a red flag warning, meaning High Fire Danger increased the chance of a quickly spreading vegetation fire in the area.

Super said the fire is headed east, away from homes, but she said residents should still be prepared for anything to happen.

"You can pretty much bet if you live in Western Montana, at some point, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, you will be experiencing a wildfire, so think about it now, and what you would do," Super said.

Fire officials said the safety of the public and firefighters is their primary concern. They ask people traveling on Interstate 90 not to park along the road for traffic safety, and to reduce the risks of starting a fire.
