Kalispell Church Looking To Renovate Vacant Theatre

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL -

The River Church on West Reserve Drive in Kalispell is just a few weeks away from ending demolition and beginning renovation on an old movie theatre.

Tomorrow, the Church's request to remodel the Gateway Cinema on Highway 2 West will go before the site review committee, the final step before receiving a building permit.

Gateway Cinema has remained vacant for several years now.

City planner P. J. Sorensen says he believes the permitting process should proceed smoothly, ending in the next two to three weeks since it deals with an existing site.

"They're sprucing up the outside of the building," said Sorensen, "doing quite a bit on the inside: leveling out some of the floors, they'd be consolidating a couple of the theatres into one large auditorium, they'd be raising the floor and making it, as opposed to now where the theatre goes down they'd be making it flat floors so that they could utilize that part of the facility better."

The River Church is currently about three miles from the Gateway Cinema.

Sorensen says this likely represents a relocation for the congregation.
