MISSOULA -

Severe weather traveled through Western Montana Friday evening, bringing with it strong winds, rain and hail.

Andy Shirtliff of Helena was traveling along Interstate 90 near Drummond when the storm hit around 8 p.m. He said massive amounts of hail fell to the ground and forced dozens of people to pull over to the side of the road to wait the storm out.  On the scene, the Montana Department of Transportation confirmed a flashflood crossed both sides of the interstate with about a foot or two ofwater.

Emergency personnel were busy responding to numerous reports of trees down, power outages and spot fires in areas from Hamilton to Missoula.

While Butch Larcombe, the spokesman for Northwestern Energy, did not give an exact number of homes without electricity as of 9 p.m., he did say that customers reported their power was out in Darby, Hamilton, Corvallis, Victor and Missoula.
