Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport Sets July Record

Posted: Updated:
BELGRADE -

The Bozeman-Yellowstone International Airport appears to be having a great year. They set a new record last month.

It was announced on the airport's Twitter page, @BozemanAirport "BZN sets July and all-time passenger record with 115,072 flying in/out. This is 1.5% higher than the previous record set in July 2012." Bozeman-Yellowstone International Airport sent out the tweet Wednesday once July's numbers came in.

The airport's assistant director Scott Humphrey said about a third of those passengers are tourists.

"Bozeman is one of the better gateways to Yellowstone National Park and we are seeing additional foreign traffic, tour groups arriving in Bozeman and going through the park," said Humphrey.

And many of those tourists are heading to the Big Sky Resort this summer to stay the night.

The resort's spokeswoman, Sheila Chapman, said their summer activities are giving them an edge.

"We added to our activities this year the Adventure Zip Line and that didn't open until mid-July so we have seen some increase in our guest coming to do that specific activity," said Chapman.

With the activities in Big Sky, like zip lining, bungee trampoline, and mini-golf becoming more popular, Chapman says they have to hire more people.,

"The demand is there, but we also knew we were adding the Adventure Zip Lining Tour, we knew were going to be adding more staff," said Chapman. "As time slots fill up and we realize we can add more tours, we'll do that, which means we will add additional staff."

Bozeman Economic Development Director Brit Fontenot says he's not surprised last month was a record for the airport.

"It's not so surprising," said Fontenot. "This is one of our busiest tourist months of the summer and people are coming in and out quite frequently. Some are staying; some are going down to the (Yellowstone National) park."

Since the airport is seeing more people going through, they are recommending passengers arrive at the airport 90 minutes before their scheduled departure time.

In May, the Bozeman-Yellowstone International Airport became the busiest airport in Montana.
