Senator Murray Talks with Energy Secretary about Hanford Budget

Posted: Updated:

NEAR RICHLAND, Wash.-- Washington Senator Patty Murray says she's pushing the new Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz to finalize a DOE budget plan and she wants to see it soon.

Hanford's future is the cleanup work that lies ahead and Senator Murray wants a clear plan from the Department of Energy on her desk soon.

Senator Murray says she spoke with new Secretary Moniz on Tuesday and told him she wants a concrete plan to meet budget requirements and particularly for the Vit Plant.

She says she needs answers for Congress so she can get the money Hanford needs for cleanup.

Senator Murray says the project has seen many set backs, but she's confident Secretary Moniz will bring the leadership consistency to get the job on the right track forward.

"I was very clear to him that we cannot wait any longer for a comprehensive plan. We are running into the fall where we are going to have to make some very critical decisions about our budget and sequestration. I need to be able to share with the Senate and the House, exactly what that money is going to be spent for because we're asking for a large amount," Senator Murray said.

Senator Murray says she is worried about sequestration and as a member of the Senate Budget Committee, she plans to work on a budget deal to get DOE the money they need to pick up the pace and make cleanup a top priority in Congress.
