Howard Neckels has been calling Deer Lodge football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, softball, and baseball since 1972. And the voice of the Wardens does it, because he loves it.
"This is just my hobby that I have fun," said Howard Neckels.
The Deer Lodge native is a Baptist minister, and sold cars through the years, but it's his play by play that people remember.
"Howard is as amazing nact of making the worst play sound like a Hall of Fame performance," said Powell County High School softball coach Jake Starr.
"Quite possibly one of the most positive people I've ever met. Even the opposing teams love listening to him," said Powell County High School girls basketball coach Kirk Walker.
Anyone whose ever met Howard, Know he's the epitome of class.
"Humble down to earth you won't find a nicer man in Deer Lodge. He would give you the shirt off his back," said Starr.
"I played against Deer Lodge when I was a kid and I still remember him and the positive attitude and just the person he was when I was a kid and I wasn't even part of the community," said Walker.
The passion for his craft shows, in his car's odometer.
"We do put on a lot of miles I think we put on 16,000 miles on the car. It's just fun to watch these young people," said Neckels.
Howard had aspirations earlier in his broadcasting career of moving on to bigger cities, but he's quite content staying in Deer Lodge.
"He loves the community he's the biggest part of the community," said Walker.
"He does it for the kids. He loves the community he loves the kids. I don't think it would make a difference where he was doing but this is where he's at and this is where he does it," said Starr.
"I think just watching the young men and young women. I mean they play so hard and put so much effort into it and it's just fun to watch them grow up and do well," said Neckels.
