Wounded Warriors Come To Bozeman To Fly-Fish.

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Six wounded warriors and their spouses arrived in Bozeman Tuesday for a week of fly-fishing.

The Warriors and Quiet Waters Foundation brings in six service men or women recently injured in Iraq and Afghanistan to Bozeman nine times a year for a fly fishing expedition. Ted Campbell is the team leader for this expedition. He said the five-day expedition is meant as an escape for the warriors.

"We give them a little bit of therapy and a little bit of psychological separation from everything that has happened to them since the time they were injured," said Campbell.

Campbell says finding the most recent heroes for this get away isn't an easy task.

"They're inside the military system and they're inside the medical system," said Campbell. "That means we have to work very closely with recreational therapists at the major hospitals we try to recruit from."

Ryan Olson is a volunteer companion for the Warriors and Quiet Waters expedition. He says he thinks it is great for the service men, but even better for him and the rest of the volunteers.

"It is really emotional," said Olson. "Especially, and I've said it before, to see that transformation and to see them opening up in that week that they are here and they start to trust us."

In fact, some are so trusting, new friendships are made.

"One particular friend since he's gone through the program a couple years ago he's came and fished with me every year," said Olson. "That's a lot of fun."

While the fly-fishing expedition has been going on since 2007, it wasn't until 2010 when the spouses were invited. Josh Cope, a Marine that went on the expedition in 2009, suggested the idea.

"And he said 'you know what, this is pretty cool. I like it. But you know what would make it better, is if I could share this with my wife,'" said Campbell.

Wednesday, the warriors along with their spouses will get outfitted with fly-fishing gear and practice in a pond.

After that practice session, they will be fly-fishing in area rivers and touring Yellowstone this weekend before going home on Sunday.

KHQ.COM - Mid August is about the time that we start to see spiders come into our homes, particularly the hobo spider. August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home. Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
