Body of Missing Georgia Hiker Found in Yellowstone

Posted: Updated:

WEST YELLOWSTONE - Yellowstone National Park officials found the body of a hiker, who was reported missing on Tuesday.

Public Information Officer Al Nash said that Joseph Austin Parker, 23, from Valdosta, Georgia, went for a solo hike on Electric Mountain and failed to return.

Parker last contacted friends via his cell phone around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  Parker told his friends he was below the summit of Electric Peak, and because of nearby lightning, he was starting to climb down the mountain.

A friend of Parker's reported him missing at about 7:30 that night and the National Park Service immediately started searching for him.

An air and ground search did not turn up any clues to Parker's whereabouts on Wednesday.

The search resumed on Thursday morning and Parker's body was discovered below the summit of Electric Peak shortly after.  The cause of Parker's death is under investigation.

Nash said Parker was working at a local Gardiner business.

Electric Peak is a nearly 11,000 foot mountain in the Gallatin Range, located west of Gardiner, Montana in the northwest portion of Yellowstone National Park.
