All-star football and basketball games have already happened this summer, and at the end of the month, you can include soccer on that list. the Shodair Classic happens every year in Helena on Carroll College's football field featuring the best seniors from across the state. this year, only three Missoula boys are on the team, and all three, played for the Hellgate Knights.
"I'm really excited, it's going to be one of my last chances to be playing with these two guys, and I've played against everyone we'll be playing with, and it's going to be cool play with them (this time)," says former Hellgate midfielder Steen Shober.
High school soccer tends to be a little chippy, and in the Shodair like many all-star games, the three Hellgate boys will be playing with their former rivals.
"Everyone's had their differences, but I think every player will do their job, and that's what we do, we go do our job, and play our best," says former Hellgate defender Waika Ham Young.
Two of the squads heavily represented in the Shodair classic are the always tough Helena teams.
"The Helena players are definitely good, both teams, but Helena High especially. They're a force to be reckoned with every year, and I think it will be interesting to try and fit into the chemistry of the Helena players who have been together for so long," says Shober.
"Well, I know the mid-fielders from there are really good, so working with Steen, I'm sure we'll have a solid midfield, and our defense will be great, we've got so many good defenders, I'm excited to play with them," says former Hellgate forward Reid Birgenheier.
Even though their last high school season wrapped up in the fall, many of the players have been staying active with club soccer.
"We got back from a regional tournament not too long ago, so we're in pretty good shape. It's been a few weeks since I've played, but hopefully it's not too rusty," says Birgenheier
While the ultimate goal is to raise money for the Shodair Hospital, and play a well fraught game…the last chance for the three Hellgate graduates play together is something they'll all remember.
"It's very special, These are my best friends, and we've grown up playing together, and this is our last real team, so us three are the three musketeers," says Ham Young.
