Missoula Marathon Brings Millions To Economy

MISSOULA -

With a record number of people registered for the marathon this year, a UM study shows millions of dollars will be going into Missoula's economy. This year, 5,000 people are registered for the marathon and half marathon.

Findings from UM's Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research, based off last year's marathon, show almost 70% of participants were from out of town. The report shows participants and the travelers who came with them to town brought $1.2 million to Missoula.

Destination Missoula said the marathon weekend is an important time for Missoula's economy.

"We fill up all our hotel rooms," said Sage Grendahl at Destination Missoula. "If you didn't book in advance it's challenging to get a room, and that's a good problem for tourism. We like to see our hotels full, restaurants full."

Destination Missoula said the amount of people participating in the marathon is up 20% from last year.
