Florida Hiker Falls 1,000 Feet to Death in Glacier

Posted: Updated:

WEST GLACIER - A Davie, Florida man fell 1,000 feet to his death while climbing Apikuni Mountain, in the northeast area of the park, with three others climbers.

Denise Germann, the spokeswoman for Glacier National Park, said in a statement Wednesday that rangers recovered the body of the 21-year old on Tuesday evening.

Germann said park dispatch received a report at about 11:15 a.m. that morning from a person calling from the Many Glacier Entrance Station and saying that a member of their climbing party fell.

The climbers reported that they could not see or reach the fallen climber and that they could not get in contact with him.

The area in which the fall took place is very steep, with cliffs and rocky terrain.

Park rangers traveled to the incident, which was in very steep, rocky terrain with cliffs, by helicopter. Other rangers continued to scour the area by air to o search for the climber. Around 6 p.m., the body of the climber was found.

A helicopter and specialized short-haul rescue team from Parks Canada arrived to help park rangers to recover the body.

Witnesses said that four people left the Many Glacier area for Apikuni Mountain, which is located just a few miles north of the hotel, just before eight o'clock Tuesday morning. All four members of the climbing party are employees of the park's concessioner Glacier Park, Inc. and work at the Many Glacier Hotel.

The Glacier County Coroner confirmed death and the body was transported to a local funeral home. The incident is under investigation by the National Park Service.
