Honest Tea Comes to Missoula

Posted: Updated:

The beverage company Honest Tea came to Missoula Tuesday with a social experiment to see how honest Montanans are when no one is looking.

This is Honest Tea's fifth year of recording The National Honest Tea Index.

"Essentially, it's an un-manned kiosk where people can choose to pay or not to pay when it seems no one is watching," Honest Tea Marketing Manager Makoto Lokting said.

Honest Tea is traveling to all 50 states and Washington D.C. in 10 days to observe and take note of which cities are the most honest.

"I think it's just an interesting social engagement that plays off our name 'Honest Tea' and to see how many people interact and how honest will they really be," Lokting said.

This is Honest Tea's first time to do the experiment in Montana and they are getting a surprised reaction from Missoula members.

"I know for me, I would put the dollar in but I can't speak for everybody," Missoula Resident Julia Milan said.

Honest Tea observes and records the characteristics of the people who pay and don't pay for the drink and add it to the index for people to see.

"I don't know if it's human nature to do the right thing but it seems like we are a tight community," Milan said about Missoula.

Honest Tea employees were downtown from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will continue on to Portland Wednesday. You can see how honest Missoulians were on July 23rd when The National Honest Tea Index is published online.
