Lake Co. Sheriff's Office Patrol in New Boat

POLSON -

The Lake County Sheriff's Office will be ensuring the public's safety on the water this summer on a brand new patrol boat.

Sheriff Jay Doyle said the $181,000 speed boat was purchased with funds from a public safety mill levy passed by voters.

Doyle said the 28-foot, Munson aluminum boat allows trained deputies to patrol hundreds of square miles of Flathead Lake and its surrounding land masses.

Deputies are on the lookout for boaters under the influence, expired boat registration and a variety of safety violations.

"It's a lot safer for our officers number one, also it is a good thing for the public because we can respond a little quicker than we were able to," Doyle said.

Doyle said the boat's front end can be lowered, making it much easier to rescue passengers or recover lost watercraft.

The boat's equipped with infrared radar to detect people in the water, and it can reach 52-miles-per-hour.
