Barbeque To Raise Money To Build Three Mile Community Center

Posted: Updated:
THREE MILE -

A group in the Three Mile area near Stevensville is getting ready to kick of fundraising for a new community and senior center. The annual Lone Rock barbeque is being held this Saturday, and most of the funds will go to the project.

Richard Erickson and a group of seniors meet for coffee at the local fire hall each week. The idea for a senior and community center popped up one day, an idea, Erickson said, is long overdue in the community.

"It became important, because this community is really close knit and people really enjoy being together, doing things together, plus it's a good sized community," Erickson said.

Plans for the center are now in full swing. Construction is planned for a 3,200 square foot community center located on the Ambrose Creek Community park grounds.

The new center would be furnished with handicapped-accessible restrooms, a kitchen and enough space to handle a variety of community events for all ages.

"We're coming along slowly but its a good effort," said Dan Metully, an active community member helping with the project.

The group called in Metully to help with the planning of the center. He said it's set to be financed entirely by donated funds, grants and membership fees.

Metully said, "Sometimes we get so busy taking care of our families, that we don't really have time for these types of things."

In order to help raise the funds, the area's annual Lone Rock barbeque was moved from the Lone Rock School to the park grounds so they can spread the word on the community center.

"When you explain the idea to people, they're very happy to hear about it, because they know it will help not only the seniors, but kids in the community for decades to come," Metully said.

Between  three and four-thousand dollars is still needed to build the center.

Two separate raffles are being held to pay for the barbeque and any funds that are left will go to the community center.

"It'll be a good start. I think the funds for the center will be raised a variety of ways."

Construction of the community center won't begin until all the funds are raised.

The barbeque is free to the public, anyone is invited.

It starts this Saturday from noon to seven at the Ambrose Community Park in Three Mile.
