$100,000 Grant for Libby Dam

Posted: Updated:

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation approved a $100,000 grant to the city of Libby to replace the upper Flower Creek Dam.

Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Officials said after technical analysis over several years, the dam's concrete continues to deteriorate and does not meet the minimum safety requirements.

Project Manager, Bob Fischer, said the new dam will be constructed downstream of the existing one and once complete the old dam will be demolished.

"It will benefit Libby by providing a safe dam, it would flood the city if that dam were to fail so it's the safety aspect of it. Also, they will be able to store more water for their public drinking eater system," Fischer said.

Engineers are working on the final design now and construction is scheduled to be complete by the end of December.
