Missoula Hosts State's First-Ever SUP Cup

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - It's a sport that's growing in popularity with each passing summer -- stand up paddleboarding. Now, Missoula is playing host to the state's first-ever stand up paddleboard competition -- the Windermere SUP Cup.

From gliding along the lake, to holding a yoga pose, to racing on the river, paddleboarding attracts people of all ages, athletic abilities and interests.

Windermere Real Estate in Missoula is Celebrating the Zoo Town's unique river community by holding a competitive paddleboard race.

"We talked to some people in the kayaking community, and we found out that paddle boarding is becoming very, very popular," said Leslie Wetherbee, an organizer for the Windermere SUP Cup. "And, there's SUP Cups in every state, except Montana, so we thought that this was a great way to bring something new to Montana."

The Windermere SUP Cup features two races: the Elite Division for those of a competition nature and the Recreational Division for those looking for laughs.

Then, on Sunday, July 21st, paddleboarders will sail down the Clark Fork River launching from the Sha-Ron Fishing Access Site in East Missoula to Riverside Park in Missoula.

"We wanted something that gave us a good run," added Wetherbee. "It's basically a like a 5K on the river."

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Missoula's river projects, including the rehabilitation of Brennan's Wave.

"The reconstruction of Brennan's Wave. It needs to have some repairs done. And, the other one is the Watershed Education Network, which provides a lot of great educational opportunities for the children."

And, while this first-of-its-kind event is sure to provide participants with fun, laughter, and a luau to follow, Wetherbee added that she would just like everybody to come out and support the Missoula community and its non-profits: Brennan's Wave and Watershed Education Network."

Space for the Windermere SUP Cup is limited to 200 participants. If you would like to register, click here.
