Missing Iowa Man Was Last Headed For Montana

Posted: Updated:
MONTANA -

A missing Iowa man who was hitchhiking and train hopping across the country was headed to Montana for the Rainbow Gathering when he was last heard from. 20-year-old Daniel Landgrebe's family members said they haven't heard from him in 11 days as of Friday.

Hope and fear is all the parents of Daniel Langrebe of Newton, Iowa can feel right now, as they hit the road on a cross country search for their son.

"This young man is very loving, very talented and comes from a loving and spiritual family," said Daniel's mother's significant other, Rod Slings.

Slings said Daniel wanted to travel off the grid and write a book about his stories.

"He'd tell us you have to experience things first hand in order to write this," Slings said.

On May 25, Daniel said goodbye to his loved ones promising to call, and headed out without a cell phone or any other electronics.

"He ensured his mother he'd never go five days without contacting us," Slings said.

Daniel kept his promise until 11 days ago, when Daniel was in Salt Lake City headed to Montana for the Rainbow Gathering. This was also the last time his bank account was used.

"He would never do this to his mother," Slings said. "He was always the caretaker for his mother, always looking out for her," Slings said.

The Landgrebes filed a missing person's report with the Newton police on July 1. While Daniel's family fears the worst, Newton police said they are confident they'll find him.

"I think he went out on his own hiking trip, and I think he forgot about his family whose worried, but I think it's promising," Newton Police Lieutenant Henninger.

Susanne Landgrebe and Slings are now trying to track Daniel's path. They said they will leave a yellow ribbon on their door as they wait for just one critical phone call from their son.

"It would literally mean everything," Slings said.

If you think you may have seen Landgrebe, you are urged to call the Jasper County Sheriff's Department at (641) 792-5912.
