Search for Escaped Inmate Comes to an End

DEER LODGE -

The search for an escaped inmate from the Montana State Prison came to an end Friday. The Yellowstone County Sheriff says a deputy shot and killed Dean Randolph Jess.

Sheriff Mike Linder says an autopsy will be conducted to confirm Jess was the man killed. Linder says the man was stopped in a stolen Jeep Friday at an intersection near the Billings Wal-Mart. Shots were fired when Jess refused to leave the vehicle and moved a handgun toward a deputy.

Still prison officials say they will continue to follow up on any tips, which led to the whereabouts of Dean Jess. The prison turned the investigation over to Powell County law enforcement after they were unable to find Jess, who escaped on Monday around 11 a.m.

Jess was part of a motor vehicle maintenance crew when he left the prison premise. The vehicle he was driving was recovered, but Jess remains on the run with no clues left behind.

Jess was incarcerated after he was convicted of incest in 2005 and failure to register as a sex offender.

If have information regarding Jess, you are encouraged to call 911.
