Ravalli Co. Burn Season May Close Early

Posted: Updated:

Ravalli County officials will meet July 15 to discuss closing their open burning season, after Thursday's controlled burn near Stevensville turned into a 300-acre grass fire that threatened homes.

Hamilton Fire Chief Brad Mohn said currently, Ravalli County follows the state's guidelines for open burns, which run from March 1 - August 31.

Mohn said ranchers who must burn irrigation ditches and fields finish burning in the spring, when fire danger is lower.

Now, Mohn said grassfires are usually started by people burning brush piles.

"It could hold off until fall, when the rains and the moisture come in the fall, it's just people burning piles that there's no need to burn, use some common sense, I mean if you don't have to burn, don't burn," Mohn said.

Mohn said county officials plan to close open burning within the next two weeks, and even sooner if the current heat wave persists.
