Summer Heat May Affect Wild Fish

Posted: Updated:

BOZEMAN - With recent hot temperatures, Fish Wildlife and Parks are concerned about the fish population in southwest Montana.

Heat can create low stream flows and raise water temperatures, which in time can lower the oxygen levels for fish.

FWP Officials say limiting fishing to the cooler hours of the day usually between midnight and two a.m. helps reduce the impact on drought-stressed trout in rivers and streams.

"It may get to a point where we have to start looking at some first voluntary closures or voluntary fishing restrictions," said Andrea Jones, FWP Spokesperson. If this does happen, we would ask anglers to cut back or we would change the hours that people might be able to fish."

Jones said the Jefferson River is known for having a lower river flow.
