Montana Grief Camp Being Held in Missoula

Posted: Updated:

A Camp to Remember– Day Camp 2013 is for bereaved children ages 6-11 or entering grades 1 through 6 and will be held Monday, July 15th through Thursday, July 18th in Missoula.

There will be ample space to run, play games, swim in the pool — and have fun! They will be making a day trip to an area park mid-week to explore, play, and have the chance to build objects of honor or remembrance.

Camp begins at 9 a.m. Monday, July 15th and ends at 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 18th.

Much more than a summer camp, "A Camp to Remember" bereavement camps have provided fun, safe, support for youth who are grieving the death of a family member since 1997. Most of the kids who participate have experienced the devastating loss of a dad, mom, sister, or brother.

"A Camp to Remember" bereavement camps are a part of Tamarack Grief Resource Center's comprehensive, year-round grief support and education programming.

Campers can play games, do crafts and swim. They can also share stories of their loved one and gain strength from understanding peers.

Tamarack Grief Resource Center's Executive Director, Dr. Christine Barrett, said, "We are committed to stabilizing, strengthening, and supporting grieving children and adults. Grief is a natural, and complex, part of life. We believe grieving children thrive amidst connections with understanding others, time to remember, immersion in the outdoors, and permission to have fun. We honor death, the relationships that continue on, and the life that we re-construct after loss."

Throughout the season, 10-12 high school students are accepted to assist at camp as PALs (Peers-As-Leaders). PALs are positive role models who have participated in A Camp to Remember in the past, or in other TGRC programs. PALs are returning to camp to build leadership skills and mentor campers. PALs must complete a specific application. Another option for high-school students grieving the death of a family member is TEEN CAMP September 28-29, 2013.

Tamarack Grief Resource Center's mission is to strengthen and honor individuals throughout their journey with grief. The organization provides stabilizing support programs for kids and adults who are grieving the death of a family member or loved one, organizational support for schools and businesses following traumatic loss, and customized educational training workshops on a variety of topics related to grief.

TGRC serves over 1,900 participants in grief support and education programs each year. 78% of children, teens and adults receive services at reduced or waived fees because no one is turned away due to an inability to pay for services.
