Crime Tracker: The Pros And Cons Of Stun Guns

KHQ.COM - A person can buy a stun gun on-line for 10 dollars, but Spokane County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Johnston says stun guns aren't foolproof. Unlike a taser, which activates probes from a distance and immobilizes the muscles, a stun gun must be placed directly onto a suspect. This eliminates space between an attacker and his victim and could allow for the attacker to grab the stun gun and use it against his victim.

Also, while a stun gun does cause pain, Deputy Johnston says the shock doesn't have any stopping power, which means an attacker could still cause harm after being shocked.

Johnston says the company, Taser, does make civilian products that operate very similar to the tasers used by law enforcement.

These run about $400 on-line, much more expensive than stun guns that start at $10. Johnston says the tasers must be registered. There are all kinds of weapons people can use to protect themselves against an attacker, but there's a downfall to each of them. Law enforcement says you need to consider those drawbacks before you choose to carry that weapon.

    MENLO PARK, Calif.
