Bogart Pool Leaking Water

BOZEMAN -

Bogart Pool has been a destination for people in Bozeman on hot days like this since the 1930s, but the pool is in major need of repair.

Bogart Pool is leaking water to the tune of 10,000 gallons a day because of a crack in the bottom the pool, but it's not stopping people from cooling off this summer. The pool was at it's 350 person capacity Friday afternoon.

Some people are concerned the pool may close early this year, but Dan McCarthy, Bozeman Parks and Recreation Department's Aquatics Director, said recycling the water helps keep the pool open.

"When we fill the pool we actually run it through a full circulation system, that's treated, filtered out, heated and sent back to the swimming pool," said McCarthy.

McCarthy said they're able to keep the pool running this year, but they need to fix it before next season.

"There are a lot of large items that we need to accomplish next season and we need to decide how we are going to handle those items," said McCarthy.

The crack causing the leak starts in the deep pool, and goes all the way into the shallow pool. McCarthy said to replace the pool's shell, gutter and boiler would cost about $400,000.

Carol Hagerman has been using the Bogart Pool for about 12 years. She said it might be best to start over.

"They may need to start over and fix and do it, you know an up to date facility that isn't going to cost more to maintain," said Hagerman.

The city commissioner conducted a feasibility study and are now asking for the public's input on what to do with the pool. If you have an idea what to do about Bogart Pool, contact your city commissioner.
