Disabled Residents Have New Group Home

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

Seven developmentally disabled adults who lost their home in a fire last fall have moved back into their renovated group home in Missoula.

Missoula Developmental Service Corporation -- or MDSC -- owns twelve houses that are home to a number of developmentally disabled adults.

It was the company's group home on Tulip Lane that was ignited by a staff member's cigarette butt last September.

In April, the seven Tulip Lane residents were able to move back to their updated home, after a long winter of living in a temporary housing.

MDSC CEO Fran Sadowski said damages from the accidental fire last fall were totaled at more than $500,000.

Sadowski said the company's insurance covered all the cost, but residents suffered the consequences of losing their home and belongings.

"Some presented some issues, some behavioral challenging things, some emotions, some crying, you know as I said, I think we all would go through those human emotions as we… it was a tragedy," Sadowski said.

Sadowski said MDSC rented a home on Davis Street for the winter, which housed all but one resident, who lived at a handicapped-accessible home.

"It was a little different for them, I mean luckily it was a nice big home, but some had to share a bedroom where they're not used to," Sadowski said. "But, we also saw that they were pretty adaptable, too, and the staff were adaptable in supporting the folks."

The home underwent significant repairs and upgrades, including a brand new kitchen that allows staff members to cook for residents more efficiently.

"The house is beautiful, I mean, it's really, it's very lovely and everybody was really happy to see the end result, and be back in their own rooms," Sadowski said.

MDSC will host an open house at the Tulip Lane group home at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
