Man Travels the World for Rainbow Family Gatherings

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON -

Folks from all walks of life and from across the country will be attending the Rainbow Family national gathering near Jackson.

One man has made traveling to Rainbow Family Gatherings a major part of his life.

He wears a guitar on his back, a tambourine on his side, and has a whistle in his pocket, he can even make a tune.

He goes by the name of Budgie.

Budgie was born in Europe, but has lived everywhere traveling to rainbow family gatherings around the world.

"Israel, India, Egypt, Nepal, Andaman Islands, Thailand, Australia, Zambia, Zimbabwe."

Budgie has been to almost 100 Rainbow Family Gatherings across the globe.

With some luck and a little bit of money, Budgie makes his way from continent to continent, and most times he has to rely on the help of others.

"I hitchhiked. Many people do hitchhiking," he said. "I hitchhiked all across Israel, all over Africa, all over Australia, all over Brazil. I went many times from Costa Rica to Mexico, Mexico to Panama just hitchhiking."

Budgie has many reasons for attending all the rainbow family gatherings.

As their title states, the rainbow gatherings are his family.

"You see people and you feel like they are familiar, like you knew them before and you saw them before, but you never met them," Budgie said.

While Budgie makes it his life to gather with his Rainbow Family around the world he says once he gets to a gathering there is no better feeling.

"For me it means kind of like a utopia," said Budgie. "It's living sustainable and living together. It's love."

Budgie doesn't know where he will go after the Montana gathering, and he says right now that's just fine with him.

Budgie says he expects the Rainbow Family Gathering near Jackson to be one of the biggest and the strongest in the United States.
