Whitefish River to Open July 4th

Posted: Updated:

KALISPELL - After five years the cleanup of toxic sediments along Whitefish River is almost complete in time for the fourth of July.

Since 2009 Burlington Northern Sante Fe clean up crews have spent their days cleaning and removing sediments from the river.

Last week they finished excavation of the petroleum contaminated soils in the river by using a hydraulic dredge to remove more than 2000 tons of sediment. Whitefish City Engineer Karin Hilding said she is thrilled to have the river open in time for the holiday.

"We're very excited that after about four years of working on the river clean-up that BSNF is finishing that our bike path will be opened for the 4th of July, which is great and the river should be open as well," Karin Hilding said.

This will be the fifth and final phase of clean up efforts. This past spring BSNF crews focused on cleaning the area of the river between Second and Baker Avenue.
