Relay For Life Raises Money For Cancer In Belgrade

Posted: Updated:
BELGRADE -

Hundreds of people are spending the night on the Belgrade High School's football field. It is all apart of the American Cancer Society's effort to find a cure of cancer.

Organizers were expecting around 300 people at the Gallatin Valley Relay for Life. They were hoping to raise sixty-five- thousand to find a cure for cancer so there are even more survivors like Lucinda Pineiro and Denise Sebock.

"I was exhausted all the time," said Pineiro, six year cancer survivor. "I had rashes. I still have rashes I deal with."

Pineiro said having cancer didn't fit in with her lifestyle.

"It was really hard," said Pineiro. "Being a high energy person and being put aside and saying "you can't do that."

Denise Sebock has been cancer free for 17 years. She said she can't describe how tough ten and a half months of chemo and radiation treatments were on her.

"It was very difficult, very difficult," said Sebock. "Sick is not an adequate description."

Sebock said surviving cancer is about how you look at things.

"I was never a proponent of 'why me?'" said Sebock. "I was actually what I considered, the healthiest member of my family. So the big thing for me was if it had to be anybody I was the healthiest I would rather go through what I went through than anyone else in my family."

Sebock and Pineiro said events like Relay for Life are great for spreading the message of hope to cancer patients across the country.

Organizers plan to announce how much money they raised during the closing ceremony Saturday morning.
