Run Remembers Officer Killed In Line Of Duty

Posted: Updated:

THREE FORKS - Losing a loved one is never easy, but having the support of the community can help.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper, David DeLaittre was killed in the line of duty over two years ago. Now, the community puts on a law enforcement memorial motorcycle run to honor him.

Denny DeLaittre still remembers everything about the day his son, David was killed.

"The guy reached into his truck and pulled out a shot gun, shot him four times and he died here at the scene," said DeLaittre.

David was killed on December 1st 2010 while serving as an officer for the Montana Highway Patrol.

"It was tough day," said DeLaittre. "I suspected it might have been Dave involved in it, the shooting, because we hadn't heard from him."

Denny with the help of the community built a memorial to remember not only David, but all the officers who have died in the line of duty in Montana since 1878.

Each of 121 blocks on the platform has the officer's name, their line of duty and the day they were killed.

"If you walk around the platform, you will see Montana loses about one officer every year," said DeLaittre. "I don't think we realize how many officers are lost every year in the United States. It's a dangerous job and I just don't want these guys to be forgotten."

Also at the memorial, a reader board sign runs at the back of the highway patrol car. It displays an officer who was killed in the line of duty that day.

"Every time there's an officer killed in the line of duty in U.S., I come down and change the sign to honor this officer and we turn the top lights on for 24 hours," said DeLaittre.

DeLaittre said law enforcement is a dangerous job, but he is glad he has the community's support to get him through his son's death.

"It's definitely a dangerous job," said DeLaittre. "When you put that uniform on and you walk out that door, you don't know if you're going to make it home that night."

The second annual Gallatin Valley Law Enforcement Memorial Motorcycle Run takes place on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Yellowstone Harley Davidson in Belgrade in honor of David.
