Coroner ID's Mineral Co. Shooting Suspect

Posted: Updated:

HELENA - A coroner released the name of the suspect fatally shot by an officer in Mineral County Wednesday.

Sanders County Coroner Kathy Harris says Howard Curtis Martin, 62, died after being shot by Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Adam Gane in St. Regis.

An investigation by the Montana Department of Justice revealed Martin called a family member while officer searched for him Wednesday evening.

He told her he had a law enforcement officer in the cross-hairs of his scope and was on a ridge near his home.

In an armed encounter with law enforcement, Martin would not follow commands to drop his rifle.

An initial investigation indicates Martin raised the rifle toward officers when Trooper Gane shot and killed him.

Trooper Gane is on administrative leave pending an investigation.
