Montana Club Volleyball Team Headed to Nationals

Posted: Updated:

The Montana Volleyball Academy is a traveling club team comprised of the best volleyball players in western Montana. The program has been around for over two decades and for the first time the 18 team made it to back to back national tournaments.

"It's exciting it's going to be a good trip it's always fun when we take the girls out of state and somewhere new and get to experience a different part of the country.  Looking forward to the tournament it's four days and I am really looking forward to the girls competing well," said MVA 18 Coach Nate Michael.

"We are so excited and we are pretty blessed with given the chance to go," said Haley Druyvestein.

"I'm really excited it was fun when we went to Ohio last year, but I think this team can do better and I am super stoked," said Kwyn Johnson.

To make it to nationals you can win your region, like the team did last year, or place in a national qualifying tournament which this years team did in Spokane finishing third. Qualifying in a regional tournament is much harder and coach Nate Michael says its a testament to the talent on the squad.

"All the best kids from the western part of the state get to come here and play on one team and it's pretty neat we have some good size and some pretty talented kids and it's been a whole lot of fun," said Michael.

The players say they enjoy playing with an all star lineup after competing against each other in high school.

"It's awesome because I hate playing against the girls that are on this team because they are so good so it's great it's a lot of fun," said Brielle Rolle.

The team says the clubs recent success says a lot about the quality of play in Montana, something they want to put on display for the rest of the country to see.

"I think it's unexpected, we see it when we go to all our tournaments in Spokane or further away that people underestimate which is kind of understandable," said Rolle.

"I think it shows just not to count us out because I lot of people don't even know where Montana is, like they ask if it's near Canada," said Johnson.

"For a lot of these girls it's the first time they're going out and competing on this national level and they're going out and competing well. These girls have come a really long way in a short amount of time and are playing at some of the best volleyball in the country right now," said Michael.

Nationals is a four day tournament in Dallas, Texas it starts June 28th and runs through July first.
