MISSOULA - It's been nearly one year since the federal government's strict guidelines for fuel economy standards went into effect.

The rules stated that cars must reach 39 miles per gallon by 2016, and 54 miles per gallon by 2025.

While the auto industry faces challenges to build cars and trucks that meet these federal standards, the director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Patrick Barkey, said the American population of drivers will also encounter difficulties while traveling on the roadways, particularly when lighter, smaller cars are sharing the road with heavier, larger semi-trucks.
