Law Requires Montana Schools To Have Disaster Plans

Near the end of this year's Legislative session, lawmakers passed a bill that requires all Montana schools to draft a new disaster plan for their unique districts.

Senate Bill 348 defines a disaster as the occurrence, or the imminent threat of danger, injury or loss of property.

Under the bill, all Montana schools are required to prepare an additional form of disaster training for students, staff and faculty by July of 2014.

Districts will decide which disaster is most relevant to their schools, and draft a plan accordingly.

Joe Brott of the Montana School Board Association said the plan can help prepare the students and staff to safely respond to anything from natural disasters to a shooting.

"A lot of it is so students and employees become familiar with procedures of what to follow, where people will be positioned, what staff does with doors and windows, those situations," said Joe Brott Of the Montana School Board Association.

Brott said the bill was created shortly after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 students and six teachers dead.

Districts must also annually review suspension and expulsion policies related to students with weapons or firearms at school.
