Hamilton School Part of Montana History

HAMILTON -

In 1889, Henry Grant, one of the founders of the Hamilton area, established Grantsdale Elementary School.

Originally, Grant wanted Grantsdale to become Montana's state university, but Bozeman won that bid.

Back then, the Grantsdale was a two-story stone building with a bell tower, and in the 1950's, a gymnasium and a hallway were added.

Now, all that remains is the addition and a few artifacts from the old school.

In the 90's, a group of parents constructed a new tower, and salvaged the old bell from a farm where it was kept.

Teachers ring the bell every day for recess.
