Bozeman Honors World War II Veterans

Posted: Updated:

BOZEMAN - On Monday, hundreds of people came out to a parade and ceremony in Bozeman to honor those who fought for our country.

Joe Garr grew up in Livingston and served three years in the Army in World War II. On Monday, he sat in the front row of the ceremony held in Bozeman.

"You feel like crying and I never cried until I was old," said Garr. "I'm on my 93rd year and you say all your life you'll never cry or hug anyone, but now I do."

The 93-year-old fought overseas from 1942 to 1945 as an engineer assembling crafts.

He said he tries to remember the funny things that happened during his time rather than the many difficult things he encountered such as the time he another Montana veteran were put on guard.

"We knew we were about 20 spaces a part. When the water flashed, we aimed the guns at each other and we almost shot each other," said Garr.

Garr was one of the 64 World War II veterans who were Grand Marshals in this year's parade. District Seven Commander for the American Legion, Len Albright was one of the event organizers.

"There's a lot of World War II veterans around here," said Albright. "We just had to go searching for them and that's what we did. We ended having a lot more World War II veterans than in the past."

He said this year was a huge success.

"I'm pretty happy with the way the day went and I was happy we had this many World War II  veterans," said Albright. "It makes you feel good knowing that the community really does care about their veterans."

At the ceremony, 18 Gold Star families were recognized. These are families of soldiers that were killed in action.
