USDA Conservation Reserve Program Sign-Up Begins

Posted: Updated:

BOZEMAN - Beginning Monday, farmers and ranchers can sign up for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Conservation Reserve Program to help the environment.

The Conservation Reserve Program is an opportunity to take farmland out of production for ten years.

During that time, farmers and ranchers are encouraged to establish grass covers to help reduce wind erosion, enhance wildlife and improve water quality.

In return, farmers will receive annual rental payments.

"It's a good program for Montana producers," said Bruce Nelson, Farm Service Agency State Executive Director. "It is a positive incentive for producers to take environmental sensitive land out of production and focus their production on land that can produce crops without damage to the environment."

The program opens up Monday, May 19th and continues through June 14th. To sign-up visit your local Farm Service Agency.
