Scammers Target Lincoln Co. Citizens

Posted: Updated:

LIBBY - The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department is investigating numerous scam complaints.

Sheriff Roby Bowe said scammers are contacting senior citizens by telephone, using the ploy that their grandchild is in trouble, in jail, or has been in an accident.

Often the "grandchild" is crying, making the call more convincing. Most often, Bowe said the scammer claims that the victim's grandchild is in jail in Canada or Mexico and requests bond money to be wired.

Several different scammers will then get on the telephone, claiming to represent the police or an attorney.

Bowe said this is referred to nationwide as the "grandparent scam."

Bowe added that several Lincoln County residents have also reported someone calling them, claiming to be from Microsoft Technical Support or Windows Help Desk.

These scammers say they will fix your computer by installing a software update, but it is actually malicious software that allows the scammer to access information on your computer.

The Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens never to give out any personal or financial information over the telephone, and to click here to educate themselves about common fraud schemes.
