Alleged Drunk Driver Hits, Kills Missoula Pedestrian

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA - A 39-year-old woman died after being hit by an alleged drunk driver.

Missoula Police Sergeant Travis Welsh said around 1:30 Thursday morning, officers responded to the report of a vehicle crash in the 600 block of N. 5th St.

At that time, it appeared a westbound Ford pick-up driven by a 38-year-old male was trying to drive around a gradual curve in that section of the roadway, when it crossed the double-yellow center line, left the roadway, and struck two adult females, while walking eastbound on the south sidewalk.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the two victims lying down on the ground and the vehicle lying on its side in the front yard of a home.

Officers discovered the driver of the pick-up in the vehicle, apparently uninjured.

Emergency personnel transported the two women by ambulance to St. Patrick Hospital, where one succumbed to her injuries and died.

Welsh said the other victim, a 41-year-old female, required surgery to treat her injuries, which included leg fractures, and was recovering.

Sergeant Welsh said alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash.

Missoula Police officers arrested the driver on charges of Vehicular Homicide while Under the Influence and Negligent Vehicular Assault and took him into custody.

Welsh asked any witnesses or persons with knowledge of the incident to contact Detective Shelagh More at 406-552-6285.
