Missoula Man Educates About Sustainable Choices

Posted: Updated:

MISSOULA- A local man spoke to Missoula College students about sustainable living.

Kevin DePuy describes himself as a "sustainable entrepreneur". DePuy converted the diesel engine in his car into what he calls the "veggie burner".

This new altered engine runs off bio-diesel, a combination of diesel and vegetable oil, which DePuy said is better for the environment.

"If we can reduce the amount of natural resources that each one of us uses," said DePuy.

"Then we'll be able to reach a sustainable model economically, environmentally and socially."

Last summer, DePuy drove over 600 miles on only 10 gallons of bio-diesel. This french fry oil-fueled truck, as DePuy calls it, is only one of the many ways he is giving back to the environment.

DePuy said, "I know it can be done. I think we don't have a choice. I think that as the world becomes more populated we're all using the same amount of raw materials."

DePuy said people in Montana should be especially concerned, because we interact so often with nature.

"I have a great appreciation for the natural environment and I think that with the onset of global climate change, I'm worried it's going away. I love to ski and I'd love to see the winters not go away," said DePuy.

DePuy hopes to spread his innovations throughout Missoula in the coming years, as part of his "Bridges to Sustainability" program. This demonstration was the first of the program, which aims to show how sustainable ideas can be realistically priced and accessible.

DePuy said, "I'm a father and I really want to help come up with solutions for the world generally. If I can help to reverse that and make a better place for my children I'd feel like I've done my part."

DePuy said one day down the road he hopes to open a bio diesel manufacturing company.
