At Least 5 Structures Lost in Rumsey Gulch Fire

Posted: Updated:
RUMSEY GULCH -

On Tuesday, fire fighters continue to fight the Rumsey Gulch Fire, burning near Phillipsburg, which had already destroyed four to six structures.

Tuesday, fire officials said that fire was spreading into the Summer Gulch area.

Fire officials said the fire had covered 300 to 400 acres and was still growing.

The fire is not far from the base of the back side of Discovery Ski Area.

Residents near the fire were evacuated Monday night by the Granite County Sheriff.

On Tuesday, some of those evacuees had lost their homes, and some were lucky enough to be going back soon.

"Looking back it was kind of a surreal experience, like this is happening to someone else, not to me," said Jessie Henke, an evacuee. "I'm okay, the dog's okay, the house is okay, and nobody got hurt in the fire."

Jessie Henke's cabin home made it through, but two homes near her were not as lucky.

The sheriff allowed residents to go back to their homes for important belongings.

In the meantime, there was no set place for evacuees to go.

Fire officials said most went to stay at their families or friend's houses.

Fire officials said the fire had not been contained. They spent all of Tuesday working on structure protection.
