Ravalli County Sheriff Warns Against Housing Scam

Posted: Updated:

HAMILTON - Officials from the Ravalli County Sheriff's Department warn locals about an online housing scam.

A Ravalli County resident reported to law enforcement their house was posted for rent on Craigslist.

The Ravalli County home was, in fact, for sale, but the seller told the sheriff they had not created the online advertisement.

The post included information and pictures of the home.

The suspect, going by the name of Gary Mills, required a $600 deposit and advised possible tenants to avoid contact with real estate agencies.

UM student Christa Atkinson almost fell victim to these scams, which can include descriptions in broken English and requests for money by mail.

Atkinson said, "I mean if we had started getting it all worked out, he told us that we needed to do all the money by mail and obviously if we had sent him money it wouldn't have gotten us a house. We wouldn't have ever been able to get it back. It would have been a very bad choice."

Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman, is urging anyone suspicious about rental properties to contact property management and real estate companies.
