Phone Scammer Poses As Sheriff

Posted: Updated:

BOZEMAN - The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office is investigating a scam, in which someone is pretending to be the Sheriff.

An area resident reported someone called and told them they won a cash prize from Publisher's Clearing house and requested they send money to a bank in Mexico to claim their prize.

A second call was then made to the same number, claiming to be an FBI Special Agent, verifying the first call was legitimate.

Then a third call was made from a person claiming to be Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin. That call came up on the caller ID as the Gallatin County Sheriff Office's number.

"I told her if those people call back, don't do anything then we sent the Deputy out immediately to the house to talk to that person,' said Gootkin. "I told them I didn't call you that wasn't me. If people get a phone call like this, the first thing they need to do is say I'm going to call the Sheriff's Office back at the Sheriff's number and I'm going to specially ask for sheriff."

Gootkin also wants to emphasize to residents, if you won a prize, you should not have to send money to claim it. He also said to not give out any personal information over the phone.
