Death of a Woman Found in a Dumpster is Ruled an Accident

Posted: Updated:

Butte-Silver Bow County Law Enforcement say a woman found dead in a dumpster over the weekend suffocated to death.

County police say the 49-year-old Butte woman was found around 9 a.m. Sunday after she was searching the dumpster behind the BSW Thrift Shop for valuables.

Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester said it appears the woman fell from a cement loading dock into the dumpster.

From the position she landed in, she was unable to get out and she was also unable to breathe.

Heavy items inside the dumpster collapsed around the woman restricting her from breathing.

"It looks like she just fell into the dumpster. In a tragic accident, she landed in a position and was unable to get herself out of the dumpster and she was unable to get into a position where she was able to breathe properly," Lester said.

County police said the woman's death was an accident.

They also said she was not a transient and has a residence in Butte.
