HELENA - Days after announcing he will not seek a seventh term, Senator Max Baucus spoke to reporters Friday from the steps of his Helena home. It's how Baucus said he wanted to tell the world he wouldn't run again. He said word started to leak earlier this week so he had to make the announcement Tuesday.
Dozens gathered to show their support for Montana's senior senator. Baucus opened his speech saying how good it feels to be home and immediately moved into memories of his late mother, Jean, who passed away in 2011. He said as he gets older he realizes he wants to spend his years here in Montana.
He said he knows he's made the right decision.
"You bet it frees me up," he said. "This is very liberating, this decision that Mel and I have made. It's freedom."
Baucus said his work is not done yet. In the next year and a half he'd like to focus on passing legislation protecting with the North Fork of the Flathead and the Rocky Mountain Front.
